Your Child’s Anaesthetic

Your child may require a local or general anaesthetic for their operation and this will be given either within the operating theatres on Level 7 of the Alex, or within the MRI or CT suite of the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

There are seven consultant anaesthetists at the Alex, with specialist training in neonatal and paediatric anaesthesia. All have comprehensive knowledge of caring for the emotional and psychological needs of children and young people.

The Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia provides a consultant led service for all neonates, babies, children and adolescents up to the age of 19 who require anaesthesia for a range of minor to major surgery.

The service provides 24-hour cover at the Alex. All emergency anaesthetic procedures are carried out by a paediatric consultant anaesthetist or by an experienced trainee under the supervision of a consultant.

Paediatric day case surgery

Together with senior paediatric nursing staff, the consultant paediatric anaesthetists ensure that the Day Case Ward provides the highest standard of clinical care.
