The clinical team currently supports weekly outpatient clinics at the Alex, accepting referrals from General Practitioners and Paediatricians to see children and young people who have a range of skin conditions.

The management of eczema in children and young people is supported by the nurse specialist who works closely with the dermatology clinicians. In addition to this, the service has access to the allergy outpatient clinics, which are managed by the respiratory clinicians and nurses at the Alex. Older children with psoriasis are currently treated with ultraviolet light at Brighton General Hospital, which is approximately one mile from the Alex.

The clinical team undertake minor operative procedures in the outpatients department at the Alex under local anaesthetic however children requiring more invasive procedures are referred to the plastic surgeons at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.

The outpatient clinics at the Alex provide a valuable teaching opportunity for medical students, paediatric trainees and specialist registrars in dermatology. The service works closely with the department of medical illustration and has links with Great Ormond Street Hospital, London where specialist cases are referred for treatment.
