The specialist team of dietitians uses state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to provide specialist nutritional assessment, treatment and advice to inpatients and outpatients, from premature babies to children and young people up to the age of 19.

Department opening hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

The team provides inpatient services for children receiving medical, surgical, high dependency or intensive care treatment. Its specialisms include gastroenterology, respiratory, metabolic, oncology, neuro-disabilities and enteral/parental feeding.

Weekly nutrition rounds are conducted with the consultant gastroenterologist, consultant paediatric surgeons and pharmacist to ensure a multidisciplinary approach, particularly for patients at the highest risk.

The on-site milk kitchen allows complex nutritional feeds to be custom-made for individual patients while providing ‘gold standard’ safe nutritional support for all patients.

Outpatient clinics are run twice weekly to support consultant and GP referrals. The dieticians also provide nutritional input into clinics for diabetes, cystic fibrosis, broncho-pulmonary dysplasia and other conditions.

Monthly specialist feeding clinics are run jointly with the speech and language therapist. Together with the community teams, the dietitian team also monitors home patients on the Total Parenteral Nutrition programme.

The department has strong links with London hospitals such as Great Ormond Street, King’s College and the Evelina Children’s Hospital, with joint dietetic clinics run several times a year. The team also acts as a point of reference for other local centres.

Several staff are on MSc and PhD programmes and the hospital is due to pilot a European nutrition screening tool.
